IB v A Levels v Pre-U

As at 2014/15 there around 700 senior private schools in the UK, the majority of which offer A levels. About 80 UK independent schools offer the IB and the vast majority of those only offer the IB Diploma Programme (i.e. for 16 to 19 year olds).About 20 schools offer the new Pre-U qualification under the Cambridge University International Examinations (CIE for short). Some schools offer a choice of A levels or the Pre-U or the IBDP. We expect the number of UK private schools offering the IBDP or the Pre-U to increase in number, if for no other reason that UCAS recognises their greater academic merit by awarding them more UCAS tariff points than A Levels for University applications.

Most students will choose a curriculum based on their perception of what gives them the best chance of getting to a chosen University. When you look at the literature published by individual schools, they will invariably say their offered curriculum is best (not least because they do not want you to look elsewhere!). They may even be right but this approach does not help YOU. Thus, we have written an impartial eGuide aimed at helping parents and pupils understand the difference between A Levels, Pre-U and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

The subject is quite complicated – so please remember you can always phone us on +44 (0) 1732 368767 to discuss the circumstances for your own child.
