Stonyhurst College - Clitheroe
Stonyhurst is one of the leading co-educational Catholic boarding schools in the UK and the oldest Jesuit school in the world, founded in 1593. It is situated in a stunning rural location about one hour from Manchester Airport with international flights to a range of destinations. The Jesuit philosophy of education is very important, with particular emphasis placed on emotional and spiritual development. Stonyhurst aims to provide ‘an education that nurtures individuality and encourages generosity’.
Unlike most English public schools, Stonyhurst is organised horizontally by year groups (known as playrooms) rather than vertically by houses. Each playroom has an assigned Head of Playroom, who gets to know the students in his or her care very well.
Stonyhurst offers a broad 6th form curriculum which includes A Levels, the IB and the IB career-related programme. There is also a pre-6th form course for students joining in Year 11.
Sport, music and drama play an important part in the life of the school and facilities are excellent and include a 9-hole golf course.
